Crop and straighten photographs

What you will do

Use the Cropping panel to apply a square frame, make a small straightening adjustment, and try a more visible rotation. You will then reset the crop and verify full-size JPEG copies without changing the source photographs.

Before you start

  • Sign in to Arams on Windows and use the English interface.
  • Create a practice project and import photographs. The documentation scenario imports the original maxine-01.jpg and maxine-02.jpg fixtures at 6064 × 4040 pixels. Do not resize them.
  • Work only with the disposable documentation copies. The recipe records their hashes before and after the procedure and must leave both originals unchanged.
  • Use a new export subfolder. The verified procedure used Add to the Name: -retouched and did not overwrite existing files.

Cropping is a framing decision. Inspect the subject near every edge before committing to an aspect ratio or rotation; a crop that suits one delivery may remove useful space for another.

Steps

Choose the framing and aspect ratio

  1. In the photo grid, select maxine-01.jpg, then open it in the large photograph view.
  2. Select the crop icon on the right toolbar. The Cropping panel opens.
  3. Under Aspect ratio, choose 1:1.
  4. Inspect the square frame and its rule-of-thirds grid. Check that the subject and the details you need remain inside the bright frame.

The photograph is displayed inside a square frame while the area outside it is dimmed. This chapter does not cover moving or resizing the frame because the verified procedure did not exercise those interactions.

Straighten and rotate the practice photograph

  1. In Angle, enter 2.0 for a small straightening adjustment.
  2. Confirm that the photograph changes while 1:1 remains selected.
  3. Enter -12.0 to make the rotation easy to inspect.
  4. Check the subject and all four edges. Rotation can reveal empty areas outside the photograph and can move content out of the frame.

At -12.0, the verified photograph tilts visibly within the square frame. The sign is recorded only as the tested value; this procedure does not establish a named clockwise/counterclockwise convention, 90-degree rotation, automatic horizon detection, batch cropping, or a keyboard shortcut.

Reset the crop

  1. Select the circular reset icon beside Angle. Its tooltip is Reset.
  2. Confirm that Aspect ratio returns to Free and Angle returns to 0.0.
  3. Check that the photograph has returned to its original landscape framing before leaving the crop interface.

Verify the reset with exported copies

  1. Return to the gallery and select maxine-01.jpg and maxine-02.jpg.
  2. Export full-size JPEG copies. Use a new subfolder, choose Add to the Name: -retouched, leave Resize to fit off, and wait for Export and Render History to show COMPLETED.
  3. Open both generated JPEGs in an image viewer.
  4. Confirm that maxine-01-retouched.jpg and maxine-02-retouched.jpg are recognizable and uncorrupted. In the verified run, both decoded at 6064 × 4040 pixels.
  5. Confirm that the two source files still have their original names, dimensions, and hashes.

The dimension check applies to the reset state with resizing disabled. It does not establish the dimensions produced by every crop ratio, rotation, source orientation, or export format.

Check the result

You should be able to reproduce three visible states: a square crop frame, a rotated square crop at -12.0, and the reset photograph with Free and 0.0 displayed. After reset, both exported JPEGs should decode at 6064 × 4040 while both source fixtures remain byte-for-byte unchanged.

Review the photograph as well as the controls. A selected ratio or completion message is not enough if the visible frame did not change or the exported JPEG cannot be opened.

If it does not work

  • No crop control is available: stop and record the visible toolbar, tooltips, and selected view. Do not substitute zooming or a screenshot crop for a product crop.
  • The ratio changes but the frame does not: wait for the photograph to finish loading, then select 1:1 again.
  • Straightening or rotation is unavailable: record the exact controls present in the release UI. Do not describe a missing action as supported.
  • Reset leaves an adjustment active: do not export the file as proof of a successful reset. Check whether Aspect ratio shows Free and Angle shows 0.0.
  • The exported dimensions differ from 6064 × 4040: check that reset succeeded and Resize to fit is off. Keep the generated copy and evidence for diagnosis; do not alter the originals.
  • The export does not complete: preserve the visible task status and error. Do not report success based only on the preview.
