Apply retouching settings by gender

What you will do

Use the two-person maxine-richard-dsc_6428.jpg portrait as one reference photograph. Configure Heal, Dodge Burn, and Portrait Volumes separately for the detected Male and Female faces, and use Others for the rest of the photograph. Copy the complete image settings to two other portraits without changing either target, then process and inspect the full-size JPEG copies.

The category names are Arams classifications, not verified facts about a person and not recommendations for how anyone should be retouched. Review every detected face and choose settings for the photograph in front of you.

This workflow was verified on Windows in Arams 1.10.2 with the English interface and Local processing. The values are moderate, distinct examples that make the copy easy to check; they are not aesthetic guidance.

Before you start

Sign in. The verified account already had Heal, Dodge Burn, and Portrait Volumes installed, activated, and selectable for Local processing. This chapter does not cover downloading, purchasing, or activating them.
In Settings, turn on Automatic face search. If Arams shows the analysis-consent message, read it and continue only if you agree. Category counts depend on face detection.
Create a practice project and import the authorized full-resolution files maxine-richard-dsc_6428.jpg (6064 × 4040), maxine-01.jpg (6064 × 4040), and richard-6433.jpg (4040 × 6064). Do not resize them.
Work with disposable copies and export to a new, uniquely named subfolder. Keep all three source files unchanged.

Steps

Start with the paired reference

Select maxine-richard-dsc_6428.jpg and open Details and Faces.
Wait until Faces (2) appears. Hover over both face thumbnails and read the Gender row in each live card.
Return to the retouching panel, choose Local, select All, and turn off tools that are not part of this example.
Choose By gender. Confirm that Male (1) and Female (1) refer to the two detected faces in this same photograph. The Others tab is also available.

The run observed one displayed Male classification and one displayed Female classification on the paired reference. Treat those labels as application output and review them before processing.

Configure all three tools on the same photograph

For Male, enable Heal, Dodge Burn, and Portrait Volumes, then set their primary values to 40, 45, and 40.

For Female, keep the same three tools enabled and set them to 55, 60, and 55.

Male and Female control retouching of the detected faces. Others controls the strength applied to the rest of the photograph, including hands, legs, the body, and the surrounding image area. Adjust it according to the result you want outside the faces.

Before choosing the Others values, the verified run kept the Male and Female settings above fixed and exported the paired reference once with all three Others tools disabled at 0 / 0 / 0.

The same photograph was then exported with Heal 20, Dodge Burn 30, and Portrait Volumes 30 enabled under Others. At full size, the change outside the faces was restrained and useful: body detail remained natural, clothing and hair edges stayed clean, the surrounding background showed no visible damage, and both faces remained intact. Those results—not the numbers alone—were the reason for keeping 20 / 30 / 30 for this example.

Return to each tab and check all three checkboxes and values. When choosing values for another photograph, repeat the off/on comparison and inspect hands, arms, legs, body, clothing, and the surrounding image area as well as the faces. The verified values are a useful result for these photographs, not a universal preset.

Copy the complete setup to the other portraits

In gallery view, right-click maxine-richard-dsc_6428.jpg and choose Copy image settings.

Open each target separately and revisit Male, Female, and Others. Check that every Heal, Dodge Burn, and Portrait Volumes checkbox and value matches the paired reference.

The verified readback was identical on the reference and both targets: Male 40 / 45 / 40, Female 55 / 60 / 55, and Others 20 / 30 / 30, with all three tools enabled. No target-specific setting was changed in this workflow. Copying image settings is different from creating a named retouching preset.

Process and inspect the series

Select the three original photographs and open Export settings.
Choose Hard drive and set Photos to Export to the selected photographs.
Choose Original Files Folder, enable Put in Subfolder, and enter a new unique subfolder name.
Add -retouched to the filenames, enable Add to Current Project, leave Resize to fit off, and choose JPEG.
Choose Export. Wait until export history reports Completed, 100%, and three photographs.
Open All Folders and confirm that the three new copies appear beside the three originals.

Open all three saved JPEGs outside Arams. Compare each copy with its own source at useful magnification. Inspect both faces in the paired output as well as the single-person outputs.
Confirm that the paired and Maxine copies are 6064 × 4040, the Richard copy is 4040 × 6064, and all three source files remain byte-for-byte unchanged.

The verified files were recognizable, uncorrupted, decodable full-resolution JPEGs. Their hashes differed from their corresponding sources, while the source hashes were unchanged. Use Compare retouching with the original when you need a controlled before/after view at the same magnification.

Check the result

The paired reference should show Male (1) and Female (1). All three photographs should retain the same complete category configuration: Male 40 / 45 / 40, Female 55 / 60 / 55, and enabled Others 20 / 30 / 30 for Heal / Dodge Burn / Portrait Volumes.

Export should create three full-size JPEG copies with the -retouched suffix. The verified export completed at 100%, produced three decoded files at their source dimensions, and left all source hashes unchanged.

This evidence confirms the displayed categories, three-plugin category setup, unchanged full-setting copy to two targets, completed processing, and saved outputs. It does not verify a no-face fallback, category accuracy for other people, or persistence after restarting Arams.

Optional: make a per-photo exception

If one processed photograph needs different treatment, adjust it only after reviewing the shared result, then process and inspect it again. That is an exception to this main workflow, not part of the copied setup. See Retouch a consistent photo series for the separately verified per-photo procedure.

If it does not work

Faces stays at zero or reports that face search is disabled: return to Settings, enable Automatic face search, and wait for analysis. Do not assign a category from appearance alone.
Category tabs or counts are missing: select one photograph, confirm that its face analysis completed, and reopen By gender.
A required plugin is unavailable: stop and check its installed and activated state. Do not silently continue with only Heal.
The pasted values affect the wrong photographs: restore their recorded values, select only the intended targets, and repeat the copy/paste procedure. Check all three categories and tools on each target.
Export does not complete: open processing history and preserve the exact status or error. Visible settings alone do not prove that a JPEG was saved.
An output has unexpected dimensions: turn Resize to fit off and export to another new subfolder. Do not overwrite or delete the originals while troubleshooting.
