Filter photographs during culling
What you will do
Section titled “What you will do”Narrow the gallery to photographs with a chosen manual star rating while culling, then restore the hidden photographs. This example shows a four-star photograph, hides a two-star photograph, and checks what happens when no photograph matches.
Before you start
Section titled “Before you start”Sign in and open a project with imported photographs. These steps were checked on Windows with the English interface in Arams 1.11.0-dev.3, using two full-resolution JPEGs (6064 × 4040 pixels): maxine-01.jpg and maxine-02.jpg.
For the same example, click maxine-01.jpg and press 4, then click maxine-02.jpg and press 2 with the default keyboard shortcuts. Check the rating beneath each thumbnail. See Rate photographs for culling for more about manual ratings. No analysis or retouching is needed for this procedure.
Show the rating filter
Section titled “Show the rating filter”- If the filter bar is hidden, click the funnel icon in the toolbar above the gallery.
- Locate the comparison button and five stars near the left end of the filter bar. These stars set the filter; the rating beneath each thumbnail belongs to that photograph.
- If filters are already active, click the circular-arrow reset button at the far right of the filter bar to start with the full gallery.
- Check that both photographs are visible, with ratings 4 and 2 beneath their thumbnails.
Show photographs rated four or higher
Section titled “Show photographs rated four or higher”- Check that the comparison button immediately before the filter stars shows ≥. If necessary, click it until ≥ appears.
- Click the fourth star in the filter bar so that four stars are gold.
- Check the gallery: maxine-01.jpg remains visible and maxine-02.jpg is hidden. The photo count below the project name changes to 1 photos in this build.
Change the comparison
Section titled “Change the comparison”Keep the filter at four stars and click the comparison button to cycle through the following modes:

Clicking once from ≥ changes to =, again to ≤, and again returns to ≥. Check the symbol and the filenames together to confirm the result.
Recognize an empty result
Section titled “Recognize an empty result”- Return the comparison to ≥.
- Click the fifth filter star so that all five stars are gold.
- Check that the gallery is empty. Neither example photograph has a rating of five.
Arams displays No photos found matching the selected filter, a Rating chip, and Loosen the filter settings to see photos. The counter reads 0 photos / 0 selected. This means the current filter has no matches; the photographs are still in the project.
Restore the gallery
Section titled “Restore the gallery”- Click the circular-arrow reset button at the far right of the filter bar.
- Check that both photographs return and that the filter stars are gray.
- Check the ratings beneath the thumbnails: maxine-01.jpg still has 4, and maxine-02.jpg still has 2.
Check the result
Section titled “Check the result”Changing the rating filter changes which photographs appear in the gallery. Resetting the filter restores both example photographs without clearing their manual ratings.
Check the selected counter and highlighted cards before applying your next action. In this example, the empty result shows no selection, and after reset the first photograph is selected. Do not assume that the selection stayed the same while filtering.
If it does not work
Section titled “If it does not work”- The gallery is empty: check the comparison symbol and number of gold filter stars. In the example, ≥ with five stars hides both photos. Reset with the circular-arrow button in the filter bar to show them again.
- Both example photographs are visible at four stars: check whether the comparison is ≤. Click it once to return to ≥.
- The filter stars are gray, but the cards still have gold rating stars: the filter has been reset successfully. Resetting filters preserves the photographs’ ratings.
- You cannot find the filter stars: use the funnel icon above the gallery to reveal the bar.
These steps cover manual star-rating filters in the current session. Flags, color labels, other filter combinations, automatic analysis, persistence after restarting Arams, and macOS behavior are outside this verification.
